Hi there,

I haven't installed FreeBSD lately, but the general procedure is that you burn the ISO image to a CD and then reboot your computer with the CD in the drive so that it boots off of the CD. Then it will walk you through the process of installing the operating system on your hard drive for future use. That's how it works with Fedora anyway. It used to be that you had to create a floppy disk to boot off of, but I think most systems use a bootable CD now. Definitely read the release notes to get the specifics since installing the OS will alter your hard drive so that you don't need the CDs in the future.

There are some distributions that actually let you just boot off a CD and use the operating system immediately without needing to install anything. This is very handy for trying out a new OS and it can also be an extremely valuable rescue tool when trying to fix whatever OS is on your hard drive. Knoppix is the one I've used before, but there are a ton of new ones on the market now.

The disk for running the OS without the need to install is often called a "Live CD"
